CASA Files Senate Ethics Complaint against Gallego for Defamation, Misuse of Campaign Funds

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Center to Advance Security in America (CASA) today called on the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) for the defamation of President Trump and personal use of campaign funds.

On July 6, 2026, Gallego falsely claimed on X that “Trump was found to have committed rape,” despite a jury explicitly finding that he did not commit rape. ABC News settled with Trump in a defamation case based on similar false claims.

Additionally, Politico reported in June on Gallego’s “personal use” of campaign funds for extravagant entertainment and family trips unrelated to campaign events. Gallego’s expenditures include almost $40,000 for Super Bowl LVII tickets and brunch, almost $1,500 for Disneyland hotels and food for his family and nanny, over $9,000 on trips to St. Bart’s and Miami for his wife’s and her boss’s birthday, and almost $20,000 in childcare reimbursements to multiple caretakers, including his mother-in-law.

“Senator Gallego’s reckless disregard for the truth in his recent X post where he claims President Trump was found to have committed rape is extremely troubling and totally inappropriate conduct for a United States Senator,” said CASA Director James Fitzpatrick.

“Gallego’s defamation of President Trump–similar to that of ABC News where the President was awarded $15 million dollars–in addition to the recent public reporting showing that Gallego used campaign funds for personal use should both be investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee as they are likely both violations of the rules.”
